Jessica Monroe has more than she can handle after her father, the area doctor, dies. That includes a farm her brother, Caleb, walked out on and several orphans her father sheltered. And then there are the numerous mysterious attacks of area ranches to add to the mix. While trying to help a neighbor fend off raiders, she also picks up Tyler Beaumont, a stranger hurt in the stampede caused by the raid. Not sure if he’s an outlaw or not, she does what she can for him—along with her friend, Stella, who learned doctoring from her father.
Trouble is, her brother Caleb was one of the raiders and Stella’s thought-to-be-dead husband was also among them. Now Drew, one of the older orphans, has gone off to track the band while Jessica must tend to the handsome stranger. When she finds out he’s a Marshall, she’s not sure where to turn. Her head tells her she must turn her brother in, her heart tells her to protect him. It’s also telling her that Marshall Beaumont is the kind of man she could love—if it wasn’t for the mess they are all in.
In this book Stang builds a supportive community with a story that celebrates the strength and determination of the independent women who settled the West. With a large cast of characters and a challenging multitude of subplots, this story keeps reader interest as it moves to resolve the seemingly doomed romance of Jessica and Tyler and the romances of a few other couples, as well.
