Stranded in the wilderness, recently widowed Jessica Maxwell is unsure of how she and her four children will survive when Swift Eagle, a Lakota warrior, surprisingly comes to her rescue and offers his assistance. Guided by his visions, Swift Eagle believes it is his destiny to help the single mother and her children. Snowbound in a small cabin, Swift Eagle teaches the family the skills they need to survive and grows closer to the strong woman and her children as he slowly wins their hearts. But Jessica and he come from different worlds and he is determined to fight his attraction in order to protect her. So when it seems his visions show a different fate for him and Jessica, he reluctantly pushes her away, despite his love for her and her children.
As Swift Eagle sees the small family to safety, he never dreams his actions would place them in more harm. And as doubts, fears, and interference from others battle to keep the couple apart, they learn that sometimes love can be hard to deny and is worth fighting for.
The well-crafted characters and their relationships with one another are what truly make this an enjoyable and believable read. With her words the author brings the characters and the time period to life.
I admired the strength and determination of Jessica as she fought to keep her family safe and battled her growing feelings for Swift Eagle. As for Swift Eagle, he was a complex character who struggled with his loneliness and feelings for the Maxwell family after having been on his own for so long. He also must deal with what he feels his visions are telling him as he believes you cannot mess with the Spirits and fate.
As for Swift Eagle and Jessica’s relationship, my heart ached for this couple as they struggled with their feelings for one another. Their relationship is riddled with obstacles and difficulties, but it makes the ending so much sweeter.
The touching bond that Swift Eagle forms with each of Jessica’s children was also well-done and I grew to care for the children as well. Each has a distinct personality and like with the main couple, the author brought these characters to life through the story and made me long to know what happened to them beyond the ending.
As for the overall story, time passes rather quickly and the author provides quite a few surprises and things I never anticipated. While there were a few events and characters that I didn’t quite buy or understand, I enjoyed the general story and watching as Jessica, Swift Eagle, and the children overcame all that life threw at them.
Moon of the Falling Leaves is a fast-paced and highly entertaining story featuring wonderful characters and a touching romance that is hard to forget.
