Trey Wells would never have thought he had anything to fear from the old adage about the sins of the father being visited on his son. But when the old man is shot dead in his study by intruders, a whole chain of events is unleashed due to Sutton Wells’ “sins.”
First, Trey’s finance rides off in a snit after the funereal when Trey makes it plain he’s not leaving his ranch in Montana for “civilized” Minnesota, especially now that he’s the only Wells left to run things. Then, in pursuit, Trey runs into an injured sheepherder and his daughter, Zurina Vasco, on Wells land, their flock slaughtered by outlaws. He’s captivated by the natural beauty who, despite the carnage surrounding her, stands her ground and fights to save her father. When it turns out Zurina’s flock has been decimated by the same outlaws who subsequently abducted his fiancé, Trey is astounded. But now the band of cutthroats is demanding a ransom, and Zurina Vasco’s brother’s name is one of the signatures at the bottom of the note.
Zurina can’t understand how her brother could be in league with the men who harmed her father and slaughtered all their sheep. She wants to get to the truth, but those mesmerizing eyes of Trey Wells has her questioning everything, including the state of her heart. She’s determined to resist his charm because the attractive Trey Wells is the very man whose father sired her (half) brother, a shameful secret her mother kept until she was on her death bed.
Now, that her brother appears to be in league with bandits, Zurina must, for the family’s honor, do everything she can to find her brother and return the woman to Trey’s stalwart arms. And that means helping Trey Wells track her brother down. And it means returning another woman to the man who has ignited a fire in her, cattleman though he may be. Besides how could Trey ever accept a sheepherder’s daughter after her father broke their agreement by grazing on Trey’s precious land and her brother abducted his fiancé? And how could she ever accept a man whose father used her mother despicably and who even now scorns the sheep that are her livelihood?
Pam Crooks has scored a bulls-eye with this novel of sensually charged action, adventure and romance. Trey embodies the tall, cool-headed, take-charge cattleman who knows what he wants and goes after it. Zurina is a feisty Latin lady who, though pragmatic, has dreams of her own—that hadn’t included a cattleman until he rode in, hard and fast. Characters you care about, a riveting story and sexual tension wound tight make this a keeper.
