Riding up to the small, isolated cabin, Chase Logan dreads telling his trail pal’s wife that she’s now a widow, much less the ignoble way her husband died. But when he’s greeted by the lovely young woman, he feels a pinch in his heart at what he, himself, has sacrificed in his life.
When she asks him to play her husband for a day, out of desperation so she can adopt a child she’s been waiting on for over a year, he’s reluctant to get drawn into her life any further than he already is—mainly because he’s scared he actually may like it there.
Chase has no interest in setting down roots having been cured of that fanciful notion long ago. But surely he can do Jessica Strong a quick favor and help her rescue the cute little girl that already has wrapped him around her little finger.
The real question is, can he walk away from this gentle, caring woman who not only needs him, but whom he suspects he needs as well?
This debut novel by Caroline Fyffe is a tender romance that celebrates not only love but the sense of community that is needed to support that love. One unforgettable character in that community is the proprietress of the mercantile, Mrs. Hollyhock, who will have you laughing as well as knowingly shaking your head as she becomes Jessica’s self-appointed grandmother, much to Chase’s chagrin. With well drawn characters Ms. Fyffe gives readers a treat as sweet and satisfying as the cocoa Mrs. Hollyhock serves her guests.
